The New Year Symposium is an event held on a regular basis by the chair of Entrepreneurship and Economic Education in the scope of which current topics and challenges concerning economics, politics as well as society are being addressed.

In 2012 Prof. Andreas Liening succeeded in attracting the former Federal Chancellor, Mr Gerhard Schröder, as a guest speaker. In front of students and pupils from Dortmund he gave a speech on “perspectives and challenges for Germany and Europe in a globalized world” in the fully occupied main auditorium of the Technical University of Dortmund.

symposiumGerhard Schröder, born in 1944, was State Premier of the federal state of Lower Saxony from 1990 to 1998 and German Federal Chancellor from 1998 to 2005. In his speech at TU Dortmund he particularly addressed the challenges facing Europe caused by the euro crisis. Elaborating on this, he outlined a reform agenda for Europe aiming at a stabilization of the Euro, at a generation of growth, as well as at an increase of the competitiveness of European Member States. Moreover, the former chancellor demanded a further step towards a real political union including a common financial, economic and social policy. Despite the present difficulties, Schröder expressed his conviction that Europe has great prospects for the future.

symposiumJointly initiated by the Technical University of Dortmund and the grammar school “Stadtgymnasium Dortmund”, the New Year Symposium of Economic Education is committed to promoting economic education for young people. “Economic education is very dear to our hearts, here in Dortmund”, initiator Prof. Andreas Liening from the department of Entrepreneurship and Economic Education explains. In addition to teacher training in the discipline of economics the department runs numerous projects for the integration of economic education. Amongst others there is the "Junior Business School" for pupils, which was awarded official project of the World Decade by the UNESCO in 2010. Moreover, in this context particular mention must be made of the "Entrepreneurship School" for people interested in setting up their own business.
